COLONICS YOUR QUESTIONS ANSWERED

What does the treatment consist off?

Colonic hydrotherapy consists of slowly introducing warm filtered water into the colon under low pressure, via a small tube that has been inserted into the rectum. When the colon has filled, the water is allowed to flow out through a large tube, bringing with it any loose debris. This process is carried out a number of times during the treatment, which lasts between 30-45 minutes. The result is a gentle flushing of the colon and the loosening of old faecal debris.

Is the treatment painful?

The treatment is not painful, you may feel a slight discomfort as if having diarrhoea or a period pain.

How much old faecal debris can be stuck in the colon?

3-7lbs of debris is probably an average amount that can be lodged in the colon, although sometimes as much as 25lbs can be present.

Does colonics help with diarrhoea?

Diarrhoea is often caused by pathogenic organisms or an irritant. Colonics is often very helpful in flushing them out. Diarrhoea can also be another form of constipation.

Can some people have rubbish stuck in the colon and not be ill?

Yes, although often people will display symptoms of a toxic condition before it turns into an identifiable or serious illness – eg: fatigue and tiredness, skin conditions, bad breath, joint pain, toxic headaches…..etc

How many sessions will I need to clean out my colon?

This really depends on the individual and the condition of their colon. People with minor problems may be cleaned out after 6 tretments or less. Someone who has been seriously ill however could need more. Once the initial course is complete it is recommended you have a colonic with the turn of the season.

Is it possible to perforate the bowel with colonics?

No, due to the low pressure used and the very small device introduced to the rectum.

Does the bowel get lazy if you have lots of colonics?

No, on the contary, the internal massage provided by gravity fed colonics together with variation in the water temperature and the release of impacted matter from the walls of the colon helps to tone the muscle of the bowel.

Does colonics wash out the good bacteria in the bowel?

Most of the loose bacteria  living in the colon will be expelled (including putrefactive bacteria and parasites) With the removal of old waste there will be a chance for long-term colonisation of the bowel with ‘good bacteria’. In the short term it’s recommended you take a probiotic culture to ‘restock’ the bowel flora and encourage the good bacteria to multiply.

Does colonics wash out essential vitamins & minerals?

Many people cannot assimilate vitamins and minerals properly through their colon due to toxic waste build up. In the longer term, the removal of toxic matter should help the client absorb more efficiently through the colon wall.

Is there any other way of detoxifying the colon?

Historically, herbs have been used to help detoxify the bowel, but they are probably most useful in combination with colonics, not as a completely effective substitute

Is there any danger of transmitting disease through the equipment used in colonics?

Yes, cross contamination is possible when using equipment that has to be sterilised, this is why I only ever use disposable tubes and medical grade cleaning products.

Is there any circumstances in which colonics is not recommended?

Yes, If the client has severe cardiac disease, high blood pressure, severe anemia, gastrointestinal perforation or haemorrhage, cirrhosis, carcinoma of the colon or rectum, gallbladder disease, pregnancy under 16 weeks, abdominal hernia, recent colon rectal or abdominal surgery, renal insufficiency or severe prostate conditions. A qualifed colonic therapist will take a detailed history and should be made aware of any medical conditions in order to asses if colonics is contra-indicated.

Is there anything I should do to prepare myself before receiving a colonic?

Increase your water consumption to 1.5-2.0L per day and cut out tea, coffee, alcohol and carbonated drinks.  If you are constipated take 2 heaped tablespoons of linseeds soak them in water overnight and drink the next morning. Avoid drinking alcohol and eating heavy processed foods meat, dairy, bread and excessive amounts of raw vegetables for 24 hours after the treatment.

When will I have a bowel movement again after my treatment?

Usually 36-48 hours after your treatment – Keep eating lightly until then. Drink plenty of water and continue taking linseeds if you are constipated.

Is there anything I can do to enhance the effect of the treatment?

It is good practice to use diet, supplements, herbs, exercise (if possible) deep breathing and skin brushing. Detox programmes which combine colonics with a range of holistic treatments will help maintain the on going benefits please ask for more details on these.

Is it possible to add herbs to the colonic water?

Yes, as well as many other substances depending on the specific needs of the client.

I hope this information has answered any questions you may have about colonic hydrotherapy.
